Even Diabetes has Benefits
With classes coming to an end soon and summer rearing its beautiful sunny head again I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to tell you about my new diabetes plan here at my new university. At the very beginning of this school year, back in August, I notified my friendly local Student Support Services office about my diabetes. They are a group of wonderful people who are there to help students...

Hello Luna
On Monday I told a sad story and ended on a happy note. Today I’m going to tell a happy story and end on another happy note! Say hello to Luna my new friend. She’s a 2 year old Basenji mix and I love her. I adopted Luna from a local shelter. Before we go too far into that story lets take a step back into Luna’s life and I would also like to remind you that should you be...

I should tell you...
Hello everyone! I have so much to tell you and I am so excited to introduce you to someone! But first I have to tell you a sad story.  If you were reading my blog back in October of 2011 you may remember No D Day when I wrote about something that was completely unrelated to diabetes (somewhat like this one). I wrote about my dog Daisy (who we affectionately call D)  Daisy has been my best...

It's Time for a New Year
Hello everyone! It’s been a long time since I’ve posted any kind of blog. I needed a break to get school work done and work on some other projects (updates soon). I wanted to check in as it is the last day of 2012 and share with you my New Years Resolutions for 2013. First lets take a step back into New Years 2012. At this time last year I had 3 resolutions. 1. Knock my A1C Down a...

I am a Zombie
Hi Guys! So long no talk (well type on my part). School has begun in full swing, and I love it! As you may already know, I have transferred to a new school this semester. I was at a local community college and received my Associates degree in Graphic Design (yay!). Now I am on to pursue my Bachelors and I am so excited for what I will learn in the next 2-3 years! Can you sense my excitement?! ...

About this Weekend
Oh this weekend was looking to be pretty normal. On Friday I finished with my summer class and got a parking pass to be able to park my car on campus. On Saturday I went back to school shopping with my little sister and mom. All pretty normal and I was looking forward to a relaxing Sunday. However that’s not how it happened. I woke up thinking I was dreaming. Why were there so many people...

A Friend Helped {Diagnosis Story}
Back in 1999 I was only eight years old. During the summer I was diagnosed with a familiar disease known as Type 1 Diabetes (Sound familiar). It was familiar to me because my mother has had Type 1 Diabetes my entire life. She was diagnosed at eight years old too! ( coincidence or genes?) When we arrived at the children’s hospital we trekked our way to the Pediatric Endocrinology floor. I...

I've found some inspiration
Recently I have been working on my summer graphic design class (which I am loving by the way) for hours on end. Before that I was consumed with diabetes camp and preparing for the week with my campers. So I’ve been out of the loop lately when it comes to my diabetes information. It’s okay though, life happens. However last night I was lying in bed reading up on the Amazon Rainforest and Pig Iron...

I feel Inspired
Maybe it’s because my first class at my new school is almost complete and I am going to have a mini break. Or maybe it is because I am very very very close to reaching my fundraising goal for my local ADA walk. Or maybe its because I haven’t had an allergic food reaction in a few weeks. Or maybe it’s just that I am experiencing a ROCKING blood sugar right now! Whatever the cause may be I am...

My Life with "Lady Lindy"
When I was in third grade I was a newly diagnosed child with diabetes. I remember feeling scared and wondering what I would grow up to be now that I had D. Then I was assigned a book report. Now usually this wouldn’t be something I would remember my 3rd grade year for but this was a special report for me. My teacher had us pick from a collection of books all of which were biographies of...

"Awesome"
What I think is awesome. What I think is awesome is that I grew up around people who knew what my life was like. What I think is awesome is that there was a sacred place for me to meet these people. What I think is awesome is that this place still exists and I am a part of it every summer. What I think is awesome is that I get to give back to the place that had a part in making me into who I...

Well Hello! Would you like to read an update on my life? OF COURSE YOU WOULD! Recently I have been so busy that I have trouble finding time to sleep (I do miss you sleep). Next week is my last week of school before the BIG TRANSFER! I am so very excited and nervous and many more emotions about the big jump. But it will be so good to know that I have made it half way through my secondary...

Hello all! I am writing this blog post to tell you of something that a friend of mine is participating in that I think it super awesome! My friend Jenny is participating in JDRF’s Ride for the Cure. She will be riding her bicycle across Death Valley in California. (Which just sounds scary and awesome!) Anyway she needs only a few more sponsors to meet her goal! (Here is where you can...

#HAWMC DAY 08 - Best Conversation I have had this...
Mom: What is your sugar?
Me: Sugar is a substance in which the body can break down into energy. Sugar can be added to food for taste. My body has trouble breaking down sugar because my pancreas decided to retire. So I take synthetic insulin to break down my sugar. Why do you ask?
Mom: I meant your BLOOD sugar!
Me: Oh. It’s 107.

However this last week, well month really has been so very stressful and I hope it all begins to slow down soon. If you have been...

Out of my Control
Just a little while ago I wrote a blog about the many lessons I’ve learned from diabetes. I stated that I was going to try and write a blog post for every one. So here is a blog post on this subject: “While low I feel that if I ask for help I failed”. It’s weird how my thoughts are so solid when I am low. I don’t mean that I am more focused on the task at had, because that is the first to go when...

About Last Night
Last night MTV aired it’s premiere of “True Life: I have Diabetes”. I have seen quite a few “True Life” episodes in the past, and I was more than excited to see this one. But actually I forgot it was on until I saw someone on Twitter mention it. Then of course I flipped the TV on and opened up Twitter to see the DOC was all over this! Overall I was pretty...

List of Lessons
I love to learn. Which is why I love school. Truly I don’t know what I’ll do when I graduate. I love to seek out and learn new things constantly. But school is not the only place I learn. I learn at home, I learn online, I learn from movies, books, TV, and people I talk to. But there is one thing in my life that I have learned from more than any of those listed above.  Diabetes....

BIG BLUE TEST RECAP
Last week I promised a recap of my big blue test festivities with the whole humaBLOG family! On Monday my mother, my sister and I all participated in the Big Blue Test! So here is the recap! But that is the point of the Big Blue Test, to get blood sugars in control using insulin and...

WORLD DIABETES DAY!
Happy World Diabetes Day! In celebration for this day many of my DOC (Diabetes Online Community) friends and I are participating in the Big Blue Test! The Big Blue Test is an event celebrating World Diabetes day by testing, exercising, and then testing again. By far the coolest thing about that is that every test that is taken helps a diabetic get the supplies that they need to survive. Last...

How do you Advocate?
Inquiring minds would like to know! (yeah it’s just mine again!) What sort of ways to you work to advocate for what you believe? Whether it be diabetes, cancer, healthcare, politically, animal cruelty, whatever you believe in. I think it is very important to advocate for something you believe strongly in. Your voice does help! So get out there and let people know how you feel! I am very...

Siblings & Diabetes
Sometimes it’s cool having a sister with diabetes. I know I always have at least one person who knows what a low feels like anyway. Actually pretty recently my little sister and I both had a low at the same time. One late night last week I had just finished some homework and was sitting on the couch with my little sister watching some TV. When we both had a jolt of energy and began...

Hiding my Diabetes Update
So it’s time for me to check in and tell about my journey in my own goals related to diabetes. I’ve made a promise to myself that I will no longer be hiding my diabetes, in fact I will be advocating more than ever. I promised myself a little while ago that I would not be hiding my diabetes from others any more. But that doesn’t mean that its going to be the first thing I want...

Getting Back on Track
I had my semi-annual visit to the Endocrinologist last week and the following are my results: My A1c has dropped from 8.6 to 7.5! “Wow, you’ve definitely improved” that’s what the nurse, my parents, and friends have told me. I believe them, I’ve worked so hard to get to this point. I feel like my life has really hit a high note for sure. If someone would have told...

My Low Box Rocks
It’s three a.m. I’ve been up for hours coughing, sniffling, and staring at my wall as I try and talk myself into sleeping. Eventually I give up on sleeping for the night and turn on a movie instead, and calculate how many more hours I have until I need to get up for school. My legs were feeling weird but inner Rachel told me it was probably the cough medicine I’m taking plus the...
