How Time Flys

I really can’t believe that December is already upon us! National Diabetes Month, World Diabetes Day, and all Diabetes Awareness activities were absolutely wonderful this last month.

Along with all of this amazing things happening in the “Diabetes World” I have been immensely busy with school and life in general. I have been neglecting my blog and art but of course not my diabetes. I feel bad, I love writing here and sharing my stories and thoughts to whoever wants to read them, and I haven’t been able to show my face in the DOC lately and I miss it!

However with the semester break coming up, the New Year, and of course my 21st birthday I have a feeling I will be writing and creating more. I love it and I will not be stopping anytime soon.

Anyway the point of this point is to say that I have a great opportunity to share with you an awesome book that I was given to read and I can’t wait to tell you about it!

The Book of Better

by Chuck Eichten

I’ll be writing my impressions as soon as I can but I just wanted to share how much I love the book! I would suggest picking it up on Amazon or the like.

For now I am up to some studying for my Semester Finals and balancing school, work, and of course Diabetes. I can’t wait to be back in the community! Expect more blogs, drawings, and videos from humaBLOG soon!

See you Soon!

BIG BLUE TEST RECAP

image

Last week I promised a recap of my big blue test festivities with the whole humaBLOG family! On Monday my mother, my sister and I all participated in the Big Blue Test! So here is the recap!

We all ate dinner before the festivities took place so yes we did expect some higher blood sugars to occur. But that is the point of the Big Blue Test, to get blood sugars in control using insulin and exercise.

image

So anyway, I had some homework to get done on Monday night and while writing a paper and getting excited about or world diabetes day festivities I decided that I really wanted to try my hand in some baking. So I made us all some World Diabetes Day cupcakes for our celebration!

No judging though because I’ve actually never made cupcakes before so I was pretty proud.

When the time finally came for us to do some big blue testing, not only had I just bolused for dinner but I had just bolused for some good ol’ frosting spoon licking. So I was expecting my BG to be high.

The rest of my family also had just eaten dinner as well so we all were expecting highs.

image

I’d say that we were right only except for me. My BG was normal, (I think you can see where this is going) Ems was a little on the high side at 233 mg/dl, and my poor Mom for some reason had reached a very high blood sugar at  354 mg/dl.

We began our work out. We decided together to do a 15 min abs work out. It was so fun to spend time with my family exercising. I hope we can do it again real soon!

Anyway after the 15 mins was up we tested again and the results were:

  •       Rach -60
  •       Em - 219
  •       Mom - 373

My poor mother’s blood sugar rose! Which is actually pretty out of character for her Diabetes. But that is just the point. Diabetes can sometime be predictable. But most of the time it is VERY unpredictable! Sometimes there is no reason for a blood sugar to fly into the 400s or drop below 30. But it happens and we have to deal with it EVERYDAY!

That is really what World Diabetes day is about! The realness and permanent-ness od diabetes is what Diabetes awareness week is all about. Diabetes doesn’t take a breat to celebrate, to take a vacation, to go to work or school. Diabetes is with my mom, my sister and I every day of our lives. We can hope for a cure all we want but until that day comes we will live with this disease until we pass on.

Anyway back to WDD festivities. After logging out BGs and exercise on the Big Blue Test website we partook in some lovely confetti cake cupcakes, and of course bolused (except for me obviously)

I hope you all had a wonderful World Diabetes Day and I want to thank everyone who supports what I do here on humaBLOG! Without the support I don’t think I would be able to have an outlet to open up about my thoughts on my diabetes and I want to thank you!

So Thanks!

WORLD DIABETES DAY!

image

Happy World Diabetes Day!

In celebration for this day many of my DOC (Diabetes Online Community) friends and I are participating in the Big Blue Test! The Big Blue Test is an event celebrating World Diabetes day by testing, exercising, and then testing again. By far the coolest thing about that is that every test that is taken helps a diabetic get the supplies that they need to survive.

Last week I said that I would get the whole humaBLOG household to take the Big Blue Test this weekend. Well scheduling conflicts affected that. Never fear! We will all be participating tonight.

However I’ve big blue tested quite a few times last week and once this morning. So to fill the void between now and Wednesday when I report on the humaBLOG household Big Blue Test-a-thon, I will report on this mornings Big Blue Test!

This morning I woke up just a few moments earlier than usual to get in a good walk with my dog, D, before it rained. I woke up at a BG of 184 mg/dl. I was pretty happy with that number before exercise.

We bundled up a little, and headed out for a walk around the neighborhood. Our goal was a 1 mi walk this morning.

image

We got about .45 mi in and it started to pour! D looked up at me and said “Really Rachel!?” (Just Kidding D doesn’t talk) So of course we started walking faster, and eventually went into a jog back to the house.

We made it back completely soaked and right as I stepped onto the porch, Nike + lady told me that we had in fact made 1 mi! YAY!

After getting in the house and unbuckling D from her harness I felt pretty low. So I tested and I was at 160 mg/dl. I went ahead and had a little snack and logged my Big Blue Test and shared with you all my experience.

image

I think that the Big Blue Test is a really awesome program and you should at least test once. Oh and here is the really cool part, You don’t have to have diabetes to participate! So get your friends and family to participate with you it will be fun!

How do you Advocate?

Inquiring minds would like to know! (yeah it’s just mine again!)

image

What sort of ways to you work to advocate for what you believe? Whether it be diabetes, cancer, healthcare, politically, animal cruelty, whatever you believe in. I think it is very important to advocate for something you believe strongly in. Your voice does help! So get out there and let people know how you feel!

I am very interested to know what you all believe in!

So please tell me:

How do you Advocate?
