I feel Inspired

Maybe it’s because my first class at my new school is almost complete and I am going to have a mini break. Or maybe it is because I am very very very close to reaching my fundraising goal for my local ADA walk. Or maybe its because I haven’t had an allergic food reaction in a few weeks. Or maybe it’s just that I am experiencing a ROCKING blood sugar right now!

Whatever the cause may be I am feeling great, awesome, fantastic, spectacular, wonderful and mostly happy. I am so happy when I think about the future and I am so proud when I think about the past.

Recently (July 21st) I celebrated a very special anniversary. 13 years of testing my blood sugar, giving insulin and counting carbs. I have had diabetes for 13 years now. How crazy is that? I can remember the day I was diagnosed like it was yesterday. I can’t believe it’s been 13 years already.

My blood sugars are great and I feel healthy. All of which is probably why I am feeling so great. But also I am proud of what I have done to get to this spot. Testing my blood sugar way more often then I used to. Taking and adjusting insulin doses like a pro (even though sometimes I have no idea what I am doing). Also I have been single-handedly dropping my A1C a couple of points at a time steadily for about 7 years (since I switched to the pump). Ultimately I feel proud of how hard I work and I am beginning to see the outcome of working hard.

I have been doing much “soul searching” lately. As you probably know by now, I have just graduated my community college and I am on to my university where I will get my bachelors degree in graphic design, interactive media, and marketing. I am all too excited for the day I get to walk across the stage in my cap and gown and accept my degree. I am also pretty excited many more things to happen both before and after graduation.

I am excited to learn new things, meet new people, and have new experiences. There are so many plans in my head and I cannot wait for them all to happen. It feels as if my patience has grown so much just in these few months of summer. I am looking forward but there is no rush. I am soaking in all the good of now and enjoying the prospect of my future in the horizon.

I couldn’t ask for more. I am feeling wonderful and I just wanted to share. If , while reading, you find yourself unhappy. Take it from me, it gets better and you will be so very happy when it does. Just keep working and you will make it!

All to which I must say YOU CAN DO THIS!

My Life with “Lady Lindy”

When I was in third grade I was a newly diagnosed child with diabetes. I remember feeling scared and wondering what I would grow up to be now that I had D.

Then I was assigned a book report. Now usually this wouldn’t be something I would remember my 3rd grade year for but this was a special report for me.

My teacher had us pick from a collection of books all of which were biographies of famous people throughout history. The book I chose was about Amelia Earhart (or “Lady Lindy”).

At the time I didn’t know who Amelia Earhart was, but as I read through the book I learned that she was the first woman to travel across the Atlantic Ocean. I learned everything there was about Amelia Earhart even reading more than was assigned and researching on the internet (which was not as easy to do then as it is now).

Toward the end of the assigned research time my teacher told our class that we would be reading our assignments to the class and that we could dress up like our “Person from History” as we read them aloud. I jumped to the occasion and my parents helped me to find a suitable leather jacket, hat and scarf. I even wore goggles to push the effect.

(I am currently looking for the picture of me in this outfit.. STAY TUNED!!)

After my speech my teacher praised me for getting so into the assignment and going above and beyond. For many years afterward I would choose Amelia for paper topics or other assignments. I read every book in our school library about Amelia and to this day I get a joy out of learning about her life and her personality.

Amelia defied the odds against her and did what she loved. She followed her dreams and for that she inspires me every day.

Whenever I feel like I just can’t do it anymore I think of how Amelia lived her life and what she would say to me if she knew I was thinking this way.

Lady Lindy has helped keep me positive and it’s because of her that I look toward my future with a smile. I know that I too can make my dream come true.

Happy Birthday Amelia!

Thank you for all you have done for me!

“Awesome”

What I think is awesome.

What I think is awesome is that I grew up around people who knew what my life was like.

What I think is awesome is that there was a sacred place for me to meet these people.

What I think is awesome is that this place still exists and I am a part of it every summer.

What I think is awesome is that I get to give back to the place that had a part in making me into who I am today.

What I think is awesome is that I have the opportunity to inspire a child’s life.

What I think is awesome is that this hardly feels like a job and I still get to add it to my resume.

What I think is awesome is that I get to meet with my “coworkers” today and plan out the week at my sacred place.

What I think is awesome is that I am a part of Camp Granada. The place that has been a HUGE part of my life, my sister’s life, my families’ lives, my friends lives and many children’s lives for many years past and many years to come!

That’s what I think is awesome.

I’m all Updated

Well Hello! Would you like to read an update on my life? OF COURSE YOU WOULD!

Recently I have been so busy that I have trouble finding time to sleep (I do miss you sleep). Next week is my last week of school before the BIG TRANSFER! I am so very excited and nervous and many more emotions about the big jump. But it will be so good to know that I have made it half way through my secondary education!

Also another huge event in my life is coming up! I have been officially hired to Diabetes camp as a camp counselor. This will be my 5th year on staff and my 14th year at camp! Crazy! I am so excited and I just can’t wait to get moved into my little half cabin and meet all of my new campers! I wait for the week of camp all year round and I am so excited for this year!

I also renewed my license (I know mundane, right?). It is the first time that I have renewed it so I got to go to the “Big kid” horizontal license. When I got there to renew I was told that I needed to get a doctor to sign some paperwork WHOOPS! I totally forgot about that, and my license expires the next day! I made it to my doctor’s office and the very very very nice people who work there helped me to get everything I needed within about 5 minutes. THANK YOU! Any way I got my photo taken, eyes checked, and was issued my brand new ID! Yay!

I’m not sure if you are following me on Twitter (because of course everyone is right?), but if you do you might remember me mentioning that I have stopped drinking soda. Well its been about 3 months on soda strike and I think that I have gotten healthier.

I have lost 11 pounds as of this morning and I am feeling great. I have no caffeine headaches as I expected to have and I have found a new found love for good old water. water is really all I drink all day and I don’t feel bad about drinking it at all.

Anyway, I am feeling so wonderful, and healthy, and excited. So many emotions, I know. But Many things are coming to an end and many to a beginning for me lately and I am so excited to continue moving forward!

Consider yourself updated.

It’s Just Dangerous!

I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE THINKING!

What happened to the daily blogs? Well I don’t have an answer but I do have something to hold you over!

No Jumping on the Bed - Tedd Arnold

I animated this storybook for a school project and this is the project where I got the idea for humaBLOG! I have of course gotten better at animation from humaBLOG but I thought some of you may be interested in seeing it!

My Dad, My Sister, and myself all voice acted in it so it’s pretty bad.

It has nothing to do with diabetes but is a big epidemic in the primary schools! ;)

Enjoy! I will be blogging the rest of the week.. Just so you know and stuff.

#HAWMC Day 15

Writing my Style

Really I don’t have a style down. I actually don’t think that I write that well. (“Maybe that is why she never writes in this blog?”)

All I do is start thinking about a topic and start typing. I do no pre-planning, and I most definitely don’t write out any thing on paper. I just write what I am thinking. Can you tell?

However for humaBLOG animations, I plan every piece. I need to plan every word to work with every movement and every drawing. So for that I do write down a script and record voiceovers over and over again until I get them perfect.

Actually I have a video to share with you on the process I go through to record voiceovers for humaBLOG animations. Check it out below!

#HAWMC Day 14

My Dream Day

A few months ago I had a talk with my Pediatric Endocrinologist before I left to go to a “Big Kid” Doctor.  She was talking with my sister and me about what we would do when the cure for diabetes is discovered.

If you didn’t know, my mother, my sister, and I all have Type 1 diabetes.  Because of this we imagined a grand party with cakes and candy and mountains of sugar to the sky! We would all chant “No More Insulin! No More Insulin!” and drink regular Coke like it was water.

We would all run and dance, jump and laugh. All without worrying about a pump site or a low blood sugar.

This day will be great!

She then proceeded to ask if she was invited.

Of course she is!

#HAWMC DAY 13 - Top 5 Things I Need

Each day this April I will be writing a post for The Health Activist Writer’s Month Challenge hosted by WEGO Health. #HAWMC Day 13

Top 5 things I couldn’t live without.

This seems sort of obvious. But here we go; here is the list of things I love most.

1.     Insulin- Obvious reasons

2.     Insulin Pump- Okay, I suppose this is cheap. I could live without a pump. I have lived with out a pump. I took injections from the age of 8 to 14. But I really love my pump and I fear that if I were to go back to Multiple Daily Injections that my blood sugars would not be in control as they are now. Lets hope I will always have my pump!

3.     Friends and Family- My support system is very important to me. If I didn’t have these people in my life I wouldn’t know what to do. Being surrounded by these people means the most to me.

4.     Diabetes Camp- I have gone to Camp Granada for every year starting when I was 8 years old. If I didn’t have diabetes camp in my life I would be very sad. I think about camp every single day. Camp has given me life long friends, and lessons. Camp is a really large part of my life. I know that my day will come when I can no longer go to camp but I hope that day will not come for a long, long, time.

5.     DOC/Internet- Now that I have found this community I don’t think I could live without it! There is something magical about Tweeting out asking how many carbs in a cough drop and getting answered back in minutes. I love the DOC!

What is something you can’t live without?

#HAWMC Day 12 Stream of Consciousness Day

#HAWMC Day 12

Stream of Consciousness Day

Oh boy here we go a whole unedited post. Please don’t judge too harshly!

Lately, of course, I have been thinking of the future. How it will be scary, exciting and inspiring. I wonder what it will be like to be finished with school with a degree under my belt. Where will I work, where will I call home? How will my brain function with out 24/7/365 homework?

How about my family? What will my husband look like? Will my daughter have my eyes? Will we all live off of the shore and enjoy nothing but each other’s company?

Will I love my field? Will I be successful in my career? Will I even want a career after I have a child? Will I even have a child? What will I do in my free time? What is this “free time” people speak so fondly of?

Will I live in a city or in a suburb? Will I drive a car or bike to work? Will I wear high heels that click and clack as I walk or will I wear sneakers?

Will I be blogging? Will humaBLOG be big or still just a side project?

Only time will tell!
